Haines Junction is located at Historic Milepost 1016 of the Alaska Highway, at the junction of the Alaska and Haines highways.

Haines Junction was established in 1942 during construction of the Alaska Highway. In 1943, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed a branch road—today’s Haines Highway— connecting the Alaska Highway with the port of Haines on Lynn Canal. Haines Junction is on the eastern boundary of Kluane National Park and Reserve.

Haines Junction offers accommodations, gas stations and places to eat. Visitor services include motels (2 with dining) and the Village Bakery, which has live music nights. The Government Administration Building contains the liquor store and library. There is garage service, a bank (in the post office), an RCMP office, health centre and a convention centre. Camping available at area campgrounds.

Attractions:
  • Da Ku Cultural Centre: Da Ku ("Our House") is a Champagne and Aishihik First Nations Cultural Center featuring cultural exhibits reflecting the lifestyles and traditional identity of Southern Tutchone people. The Kluane National Park Visitor Centre (open mid-May to September), inside Da Ku Cultural Centre, has interpetive exhibits, information on the park, natural history exhibits and interpretive programs. Campfire talks and guided hikes begin in late June and continue through August.
  • Flightsee Kluane National Park by fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter.
  • Raft the Tatshenshini, Alsek and Dezadeash rivers.
  • Our Lady of the Way Catholic Mission was built in 1943, using parts from an old Army Quonset hut left from highway construction days.
  • St. Christopher’s Anglican Church was built by local craftsmen.
  • Special Evenets: Canada Day (July 1st); Kluane to Chlkat International Bike Relay (in June).
