| Incorporated as a village in 1921, Smithers officially became a town in Canada’s centennial year, 1967. The original site was chosen in 1913 by construction crews working on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway (the town was named for one-time railway chairman, A.W. Smithers). Today, Smithers is is the largest town in the Bulkley Valley and a distribution and supply centre for farms, mills and mines in the area. Sitting amidst rugged mountains, the downtown area was reconstructed in 1979, and given a Swiss village character with alpine-themed storefronts and buildings murals. The alpenhorn player statue on Main Street is a favorite photo subject. Smithers offers complete visitors services: Food and lodging at Hudson Bay Lodge, Stork Nest Inn, Aspen Inn & Suites, and Capri Motor Inn and Family Restaurant.
