High Level is located at the junction of Highways 35 and 58, 174 miles north of Grimsaw.

Begun as a small settlement on the Mackenzie Highway after WWII, High Level grew with the oil boom of the 1960s and completion of the railroad to Pine Point. Today, High Level serves as a transportation centre for the northwestern Peace River region and has the most northerly grain elevators in North America.

Visitor facilities include lodging at Greenway Country Accommodations and at major chain motels; dining at fast-food outlets and restaurants; 24-hour gas station; grocery stores, laundromats and car washes. Aspen Ridge Campground is 2 km south of town.

Mackenzie Crossroads Museum & Visitors Centre has extensive local and regional information for Alberta and the Northwest Territories and museum displays.
Recreation includes a golf hiking trails, hunting (moose, caribou, deer, bear) and fishing for northern pike, perch, walleye, whitefish, goldeye and grayling.
