Grande Cache is located on Alberta Highway 40 (the Bighorn Highway), 114 miels south of Grande Prairie.

Grande Cache was established in 1969 in conjunction with resource development by McIntyre Porcupine Coal Ltd. In 1980 a sawmill was constructed by British Columbia Forest Products Lt. Historically, the location was used as a staging and storage area for fur trappers prior to their departure to trap lines in what is now part of Willmore Wilderness Park.

Visitor facilities include 4 motels, 3 hotels and several B & B's, restaurants, gas stations, car washes, banks and laundromats. Camping at Grande Cache Municipal Campground. Shopping facilities include several small shopping centres, a supermarket, a bakery, sporting goods store and 2 department stores.
